Apple's new HomePod to compete with Amazon, Google

"That, in turn, could boost usage of the Apple Pay service, which has been underwhelming in the almost three years since it launched". Expect it to shrink to a lower corner, much like the UI.

Apple has announced it is is launching a smart home speaker and electronic assistant called HomePod, created to compete with Amazon's Echo and Google's Home devices.

Munster was not as enthusiastic about the HomePod, which was developed to rival Amazon's Echo (AAPL) and Google's Home (GOOGL). But in recent years, Apple has made a push to turn the iPad from a nice-to-have on which you can comfortably browse a magazine or two, to something else-something that could legitimately replace the laptop. Apple's new 10.5-inch iPad Pro is a bit larger than the current iPad Pro 9.7-inch variant. But Apple is promising easier one-handed typing, with easy access to numbers, symbols and punctuation.

"HomePod ... is actually more of a competitor to a Sonos or Bose speaker", said Forrester analyst Julie Ask.

The Echo, released in 2015, and Google Home, released previous year, were the first entrants in a promising market.

Apple Pay will get easier to use payments between friends using cards in your Wallet via Siri voice commands.

Driving guidance: Apple in its iOS 11 has also added new improvements to Maps which can be used while driving in a auto. The display of Apple's latest tablet is 20 percent larger than its predecessor. They care about the audio experience perhaps more so than they do the home control experience. The company "can't afford to yield valuable real-estate in the heart of people's homes to Amazon, Google and others", said Geoff Blaber, research analyst at CCS Insight. To be available in December, the HomePod comes with Siri's intelligence and it also responds to touch. The iPhone personal digital assistant will also soon support more third-party applications, meaning Siri's functionalities will soon enjoy a wider coverage than ever.

Apple had plenty of other announcements.

On the design front, the App Store is also getting a makeover. Apple said that makes the Mac a great platform for developing virtual-reality "experiences", although the company didn't announce any consumer VR products.

It features autoplay block that detects websites that automatically play videos. The iPad Pro displays will have a new feature called ProMotion, and will dynamically switch the display refresh rate between 60Hz to 120Hz-this means that all fast-moving video and gaming content will look more fluid. Both versions of the iPad now feature the True Tone display that adjusts the colour temperature on the fly depending on lighting conditions, first introduced a year ago with the 9.7-inch Pro.

With iOS 11 Apple is adding a much needed social element to its Music app.
