Vijay Mallya spotted at India-Pakistan Champions Trophy game in Birmingham

Sixty-one-year-old Mallya, chief of erstwhile Kingfisher Airlines owes over Rs 9,000 crore to various Indian banks and is now wanted in India.

Former liquor baron Vijay Mallya was seen in the stands at Edgbaston in Birmingham enjoying the cricket match between India and Pakistan, reports said. Mallya owes Indian banks Rs 9,000 crore (with interest) in cases related to embezzlement, debt recovery and foreign exchange transgression.

Although Hindustan Times could not alone confirm the veracity of the pictures, the absconding businessman was dressed in white and could also be seen showing something to former India captain Sunil Gavaskar.

He is next set to appear in front of the British court on May 17.

Mallya has been on the run since March 2016 after his name showed up in CBI's chargesheet regarding Kingfisher Airlines's unpaid loans to IDBI Bank. In November past year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally explained to visiting British PM Theresa May why it was important that Mallya had to return to India.

Vijay Mallya had fled to United Kingdom after severe cases of financial default piled up on him.

Mallya has been declared an absconder in India. Mallya was released on conditional bail hours after his arrest on a bail bond of 6,50,000 pounds.

April 2016: Mallya formally arrested in England by Scotland Yard on an extradition warrant.

People wonder how come a person, whom India's top agencies are trying to track and bring back to the nation, make such a royal appearance at a prestigious event that was being viewed live by millions.
