SOG jawan killed, 10 injured in Maoist ambush

More than 300 rounds of ammunition were used in the exchange of gunfire that lasted for approximately an hour.

Kandhamal Superintendent of Police (SP) Pinak Mishra said the critically injured troopers have been shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.

Speaking to newsmen at the hospital, the injured jawans said the Maoists fired at their vehicle from three sides and hurled grenades. The slain jawan was identified as Laxmikant Jani of Kalahandi district.

Phulbani (Odisha), June 5 (PTI) A security personnel was killed and six others were injured when Maoists ambushed a convoy of the Special Operation Group (SOG) in Baliguda area of Kandhamal district, the police said today.

Home Secretary Asit Tripathy said that anti-Maoist operations were on in Kandhamal and Kalahandi and that the State Government would give a fitting reply to the Maoists for their attack. Although there were 8 SUVs in which security forces were returning, the Maoists targeted the last vehicle. Reinforcement has been mobilised to step up the search operation. "Sacrifice of our jawan will not go in vain".

Odisha DGP K.B. Singh along with the IGP visited the spot of the ambush on Sunday. "The standard operating procedure was followed when the jawans returned after a combing operation".
