The incident was investigated by the Michigan State University Police, which requested four warrants - three for sexual assault and a fourth for a non-sexual crime.
After months of investigations, the Ingham County prosecutor has charged three Michigan State University football players in connection with sexual assault that took place on campus earlier this year.
"I have chose to authorize sexual assault charges against the three persons whose warrants were requested by the MSU Police", the statement read.
Siemon said in a press release that the three men allegedly assaulted a woman in an East Lansing apartment on January 16. The statement did not reveal the names of the three players but those would come to light when they are arraigned, something that could happen as soon as Tuesday.
Simon said Dantonio's handling of the sexual assaults was "above reproach" and all current senior members of the football staff complied with university regulations in reporting the incident to proper authorities.
Last week, MSU announced that it would not renew the contract of Curtis Blackwell, who was Director of College Advancement and Performance. The Title IX investigation was conducted separately from the criminal investigation by the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office.
Dantonio, meanwhile, contacted the university's Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) immediately after being told about the matter by another player who wasn't involved, the report says. After Siemon's office approved of issuing charges, Dantonio promptly dismissed Robertson from the team. In addition, one member of the football staff declined to be interviewed. "It is our practice not to release names of suspects in denied cases".
Siemon's decision on Monday comes on the heels of the university's board meeting with football coach Mark Dantonio and athletic director Mark Hollis, with the board issuing a statement in support of the two. Blackwell had been suspended with pay starting in February in connection with the ongoing investigation.
Michigan State released the results of the investigation, conducted by the Jones Day law firm, on Monday afternoon.
"Coach Dantonio handled this with the utmost integrity and swiftness", Simon said.
