Apple said Siri will now be able to create appointments on an iPhone after an appointment is booked on a Mac, for example, marking the first time that privacy-conscious Apple has let the assistant work across devices.
Apple "can't afford to yield valuable real-estate in the heart of people's homes to Amazon, Google and others", said Geoff Blaber, research analyst at CCS Insight.
In addition, the company introduced another series of innovations, including: the ability to transfer money easily via text messages synchronized with the Apple Pay service; options to translate languages via Siri, which now is only available for some languages; the ability to share and receive playlists from friends using Apple Music; improvements to Apple Maps; storing text messages in the cloud, and more.
The speaker will sell for about $350 in December in the USA, United Kingdom and Australia.
The HomePod is Apple's first new gadget in almost three years, following its announcement of the Apple Watch in September 2014. The poll also found that Siri is already used more often than intelligent assistants like Cortana, Alexa, and Google Assistant.
Apple's big announcements of the day are mostly hardware focused-new iMacs, and that insane powerful iMac Pro.
The company unveiled a speaker called "HomePod" on Monday at its annual developers conference.
Safari, Apple's web browser, is getting new features aimed at online annoyances.
New features coming to iPhones and iPads include messages that sync to Apple servers in the cloud.
While Pay Cash has been long anticipated, its success will depend on how many users switch from other services like PayPal's Venmo, Square Cash, and many major banks, not to mention Facebook. It will block videos that start playing automatically, for instance, and can also prevent ads from following and profiling users. So far, the service has limited payments to purchases of products and services from companies and other organizations. It will not block the ads themselves, though.
Apple is introducing an iPad Pro in a new size in an attempt to revive interest in its once hot-selling line of tablets.
