World Environment Day being marked today

The root cause of this degradation in air quality lies in the way we treat our environment.
The governor's office issued a copy of his message on World Environment Day on Sunday.
The "Connecting People to Nature", the theme for World Environment Day 2017, invites all of us to unite to build that kind of nature-friendly relationship. "We have to ensure that we fulfill our solemn duty to protect and preserve nature, ensure that the forests remain as dense and rich as they were handed over to us and we no longer pollute the rivers", he asserted.
He said that the day was observed every year to raise global awareness to protect Mother Nature and planet earth through various positive environmental actions.
"All of them employ local people and have their doors wide open to the public, because we know now this is the surest path to more inclusive and sustainable development, respectful of the boundaries of the planet", she said, calling women and men everywhere "to connect with the nature around them that gives beauty, meaning and harmony to the lives we lead".
This year's World Environment Day, expects to bring knowledge and awareness to the people about the need to sustain environment in their activities and daily lifestyle. "Let us pledge to do it and start it today", he added.
The real sentiment behind World Environment Day must pervade every moment of our day as "worship and protection of nature is in our DNA", Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Sunday. Modi tweeted,"We salute the will & determination of all those individuals & organisations working towards protecting the environment". This year's host country Canada chose the theme.
The state government in Kerala will launch a massive tree planting exercise today on the occasion of world environment day. Climate change is real - in fact, it is here.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has urged the people to support the initiative.
