United triumph for Manchester

Spain worldwide Juan Mata expressed his delight at helping United land the only major trophy missing from the club's honours, but his thoughts were also primarily with those affected by the shocking events in Manchester.

"Yesterday we didn't want to have the press conference because we had to prepare ourselves to do our job and to try to forget events which are much more important than our job", he said referrring to the decision to cancel the news conference.

"It means for the club the last piece of the puzzle, it is now like Ajax is and some other clubs - a club with every trophy in the world of football". Since then, the Champions League has gone back and forth between Barcelona and Real Madrid (and could be set to stay in the Spanish capital at the end of this season), while Sevilla retained an iron grip on the Europa League, winning it three times in a row between 2014 and 2016. Bu virtue of this title, victory, Manchester United also qualifies for the group stages in the next season of the UEFA Champions League.

"Mourinho hates losing, during the week he tried to motivate the team as well as he could, focusing on not committing any errors, we didn't make any mistakes and we played well", Mata told reporters.

And Mourinho's gambled paid off on Wednesday night as he finished his first season as Manchester United with two trophies and Costinha insisted that people were too quick to doubt his former manager.

"It's so unfair what happened to him but life and football sometimes are", said Mourinho.

Obviously I'm happy to be part of that and in some way help the club win trophies, and that's the way it's been over the previous year. We only got second balls. We went behind to a deflected shot and then it was very hard against such a side. We won for Manchester, we worked for them, for the country. We fought hard for this since the beginning.

Mourinho, meanwhile, made no apologies for his tactics, remarking: "There are lots of poets in football but poets don't win many titles".

"We had to come here we had to play a very important game for us and I think we did the best we could". We weren't good enough.
