Murray beats Del Potro in straight sets

- World number one Andy Murray beat Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro 7-6 (8) 7-5 6-0.

Nishikori broke early in the fifth set and was serving for the match when Chung broke back, but the Japanese player sealed the result when his opponent double faulted.

The powerful Del Potro peppered Murray with a barrage of forehands in the first set, but faded fast and was beaten by the rampant top seed in straight sets.

Muguruza beat Serena Williams in the French Open final previous year.

"The five-set format has definitely helped, so I have maybe not been as anxious going into some of the matches, because I know there is some time to turn it around".

"To play him this early on in a slam is obviously not easy", mused Murray in his post-match press conference.

Garcia, seeded 28, made the 4th round of a Slam for the first time with a 6-4, 4-6, 9-7 win over Taiwan's world number 109 Hsieh Su-Wei. I'm working things out whilst I'm playing the matches, and that's the really, really important part of my game, making adjustments.

"It's been a few years now since we have been in the Champions League so I'm very pleased with that".

Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic celebrates her win over Germany's Carina Witthoeft during their third round match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium, Sunday, June 4, 2017 in Paris. The further that you go, the better you start to feel, the more confidence you get and you are in the second week of a slam, so anything is possible.

"There were things I did today that, if I can do them consistently well over the next week or so, then I could do really well. I'm under the impression that I have just come out of bed". "I started playing much quicker". "So I need to respect that and work hard in practice and concentrate".

Yet two days on and the towering Argentine national hero, a former US Open victor whose career has been blighted by a wrist injury and a series of unfortunate ailments, was requiring his own comfort blanket after his spirit was broken and bruised by Andy Murray recapturing the opulent levels that make him the world number one he is.

Both players had chances to serve for the match in an intriguing third set. The next came at 5-4, but he netted a backhand, then double-faulted to grant a break point that Murray claimed with a forehand victor. Kasatkina won the next four games and held three set points in the 10th game, but Halep edged through after closing out the match with a backhand that stuck the net cord.

Down 3-5, Murray saved a set point before fending off another set point when del Potro served for the opener at 5-4.

"Andy proved he is a real No. 1", said Del Potro.

The third set was much more straightforward with the number one striding past a dejected Del Potro without dropping a game in a clinical show of his ability as the world's best player. "I couldn't believe that set-that I lost that set".

Opening the breaker with his first double fault, Murray was down 3-4 when he pulled two successful serve-and-volley plays for 5-4. He is is aiming to reach the quarter-final in Paris for the second time.

Three men's singles third-round matches were halted in progress: No. 8 Kei Nishikori leads Chung Hyeon 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 0-3; Karen Khachanov leads No. 21 John Isner 7-6 (1); and No. 15 Gael Monfils leads No. 24 Richard Gasquet 6-5. "Whoever won that first set had big momentum".

"It's slow and heavy and coming back in these conditions is hard".

"Obviously his reaction at the end of the first set, he was pretty disappointed".
