London Fortifies Bridges to Protect Pedestrians From Attack

Investigators searched two homes Monday and detained "a number" of people in the investigation into a van and knife attack in the heart of London that left seven people dead.

Britain's opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called on Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May to resign after she presided over cuts to police numbers during her six years as interior minister.

Authorities also faced scrutiny over what they knew about the alleged perpetrators of the attack in which the three men rammed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and went on a stabbing spree in nearby Borough Market.

The vehicle and knife attack killed seven people in a busy section of London Saturday and wounded almost 50 people.

A friend told the BBC Asian Network he had reported him to the anti-terror hotline after he began expressing increasingly radical views and justifying terror attacks, but the friend said he was never arrested.

Police have not released the names of the attackers and British newspapers refrained from identifying the men.

May faced questions from reporters on Monday over whether she regretted cutting police numbers by around 20,000 during her time as interior minister from 2010 to 2016.

One attacker had a connection to Ireland, a source briefed by an Irish counter-terrorism official said.

"The police are working hard to establish the identities of all those who were tragically killed or injured in the attack", the prime minister said following a meeting of the government's emergency committee Cobra, "The victims came from a number of nationalities".

Three attackers were shot dead by eight police officers.

The world needs new rules for cyberspace to "deprive the extremists of their safe spaces online", she said, according to Independent.

Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said "we need to look at our resourcing" in response to the emerging terrorism threat.

Abz, 27, is said to be from Barking in east London, was pictured lying on the ground after police swooped on the attackers on Saturday night and shot them dead in a flurry of 50 bullets.

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the main opposition party, called on May to resign over the issue, saying earlier that "you can not protect the public on the cheap", and promising to recruit another 10,000 police officers if he is elected into power.

Police carried out two raids on Monday morning at addresses in east London.

In a series of tweets late Saturday and early Sunday, Trump challenged London Mayor Sadiq Khan for saying there was "no reason to be alarmed".

"Over the last seven years, we as a city have lost 600 million pounds ($775 million) from our budget", he said.

She also stated that she had gathered evidence and handed over pictures to the Barking Police, who instead told her to "leave the photos for [her] own safety".

But in a statement on its website, the mosque said: "We feel until the police release more information it is not appropriate for us to speak about anyone that may or may not have prayed here".

Khan and Dick were briefly heckled by a man who called for more police to be put on the streets. "He was standing over there, I could see them from my window", Gasperri said.
