Etihad airline suspends flights to Qatar

The UAE government gave Qatari diplomats 48 hours and Qatari residents and visitors 14 days to leave the UAE "for precautionary security reasons".

Saudi Arabia said Qatari troops would be pulled from its continuing war in Yemen.

The Saudi-led Arab coalition fighting Yemen's Houthi rebels also expelled Qatar from its alliance, alleging support of "al-Qaeda and Daesh [also known as ISIS], as well as dealing with the rebel militias", according to Saudi's state media agency.

The statement went on to accuse Qatar of supporting what it described as Iranian-backed militants in its restive and largely Shi'ite Muslim-populated Eastern region of Qatif and in Bahrain.

Egypt too has followed a similar trend and has closed its gates for all Qatari transportation, its foreign ministry said.

Iran saw America pulling the strings.

Forecasting that the strained ties between the Arab states will continue to worsen in future, Zibakalam concluded that Tehran is very likely to back Qatar in the Saudi row as ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia have already broken off.

The move is seen as a significant split between powerful Gulf countries that are also close U.S. allies.

Stocks in Qatar plunged over 7 per cent on Monday, erasing almost 30 billion Qatari riyals off the market cap of the index, following the decision by the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt to suspend diplomatic and transport links with the country.

In response, Qatar regretted the decision to cut relations with Doha, saying the move was "unjustified" and was based on "claims and groundless allegations".

"It is a major and serious development", he told SBS World News.

Sunni-ruled Bahrain's news agency said Manama was cutting ties with Doha over its insistence on "rocking the security and stability of Bahrain and meddling in its affairs".

Etihad, Emirates, Fly Dubai and Gulf Air said Monday they would halt all flights in and out of Doha, the Qatari capital, starting Tuesday morning.

A statement issued by Saudi Arabia said the "decisive" measure was due to "gross violations committed by authorities in Qatar over the past years". Some of the market's top blue chips were hit hardest, with Vodafone Qatar, the most heavily traded stock, sliding its 10 percent daily limit.

According to Sputnik news, Libya has also broken off diplomatic relations with Qatar following the move by Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

New metro and roadway projects are also in place to help to improve transport links in Qatar in time for the tournament.

The host of the football World Cup 2022 said it has been subjected to an "incitement campaign based on fabrications, which reflects an intention to harm Qatar". It has for years presented itself as a mediator and power broker for the region's many disputes.

And it came just weeks after President Trump met with Arab and Muslim leaders in Saudi Arabia and called for a unified front against extremism - a visit that analysts said had also served to bolster the regional assertiveness of Saudi Arabia and its closest allies.
