Champions Trophy: India thrash Pakistan in rain-interrupted tie

The Men in Blue cruised to a total of 319 thanks to great knocks from Rohit Sharma (91 from 119 balls) and Virat Kohli (unbeaten 81), before their bowlers took over and obliterated Pakistan's lineup.

Asked to bat, the Indians rode on a power-packed performance by the top order to post a challenging total of 319/3 in an innings affected by rain twice - and consequently shortened to 48 overs.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, like they did so often four years ago, showed their potency as an opening partnership, and while one of them struggled a little to 91 runs - odd as it might sound when someone scores 91 - for India it was all about building that solid base, so that they could go slam-bang-thank-you-ma'am in the second half of the innings.

Even if Pakistan had not grappled with the age-old problem of dropped catches - Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli plundered 45 off 24 and 38 off 12 after being reprieved - Pakistan might have still had to chase 280, which on the evidence of their batting might have been handful.

Amir's first spell of four overs was exceptional as he gave away 14 runs and was a tad unlucky to not get a wicket. Yuvraj is in the team because he is a game changer.

"If he plays like that you know the team is always in a good space because you can really rely on him to come in and just play a match-changing innings, more often than not", Kohli said.

Former Pakistan skipper Imran Khan said though winning or losing is part of the game, it was painful to see Pakistan lose against India without competing. The stylish left-hander praised Dhawan and Rohit for the start they gave their team and hoped that Team India would take this confidence in to their next match.

When Yuvraj departed lbw to Hasan it led to another upping of the ante, Kohli unfurling three sixes and three fours in a savage 11-ball interval before Hardik Pandya clubbed Imad Wasim for three sixes in as many balls in the 48th and final over.

"I would say 9 out of 10". And we came back in, and so as a player who likes to play the long innings, till the end and usually plays like that for the team, it becomes very hard to find momentum every time you come back and all you gotta do is play yourself in again. And Hardik, 18 off five balls, was outstanding. Very strong performance, we've taken the confidence from the practice games. They play spin really well, and majority are right-handers.

"I thought we all batted really well". You just have to go and back yourself, and tell the opposition that you're here to attack.

"I felt like a club batsman while playing alongside Yuvi, the way he was hitting the ball".
