Trump targets India, China as U.S. exits climate pact

In a phone call with the US President, Prime Minister Theresa May expressed her "disappointment" and stressed that the United Kingdom remains committed to the Paris agreement.

What is the Paris Climate Accord and what does it do?

The alliance will convene USA states that are "committed to taking aggressive action on climate change", according to Cuomo's office.

The UN body that handles climate negotiations said the accord could not be renegotiated based on the request of a single nation.

U.S. think tank Climate Interactive predicts that if all nations fully achieve their Paris pledges, the average global surface temperature rise by 2100 will be 3.3°, or 3.6° without the US.

But this analysis by MIT found it would reduce the planets warming a full degree celsius in that time. Although this level of temperature change may seem paltry, the deal put significant strain on food and energy production, as well as on clean water sources.

"What does the president actually believe on climate change: Does he still believe it's a hoax?"

China, the European Union and India, which along with the U.S. make up the four biggest emitters of carbon dioxide, restated their commitment to the accord. The Agreement also provides for enhanced transparency of action and support through a more robust transparency framework.

The opportunities for China are vast, as it can step into the U.S. role of providing technology and equipment transfer to developing nations to help them meet their commitments under the Paris agreement. On October 5. 2016, the threshold for entry into force of the Paris Agreement was achieved. Firms producing the most pollution are the ones that have to pay the highest cost. "If nations around the globe want to see to learn from us what we're doing to reduce our Carbon dioxide footprint, we're going to share that with them". This meeting is held in efforts to boost transparency and to ensure that each nation can update their policies and plans in accordance with the latest scientific and technological avenues available.

While Trump had made it clear during the run-up to elections that he is a climate change sceptic, his criticism of India and China during his announcement has taken many by surprise, especially ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States later this month.

What happens to the U.S. now that it has withdrawn?

Trump, who will mark the 100th day of his presidency on Saturday, told Reuters in an interview he would announce his decision "in about two weeks", but complained that China, India, Russia and other countries were paying too little to help poorer countries battle climate change under the agreement's Green Climate Fund.

The UN World Meteorological Organisation said that, in the worst scenario, the United States pullout could add 0.3° to global temperatures by the end of the century.

Geneva: The US withdrawal from the Paris climate pact could "in a worst case scenario" add a 0.3 degree Celsius rise in global temperatures over the 21st century, the United Nations said on Friday.
