New England states join Paris climate goal alliance

Potential Democratic candidates for governor in 2018 were quick to denounce Trump and endorse the new alliance.

The three governors plan to meet the goal through state executive orders.

He said his own foundation will help coordinate the USA effort, which will be called America's Pledge, and it will help submit "nationally determined contributions" like other nations. For example, NY state has in place a State Energy plan that includes reducing green house gas emissions by 40% from 1990 levels by 2030 and a commitment to source 50% of the state's electricity from renewable by the same year.

"Nothing can and will stop us from doing so", she said in a brief statement to reporters. "The Paris Agreement and taking strong action on climate change is good for future generations of explorers and is also good for our business - to stay competitive and protect our outdoor playgrounds", Arne Arens, president of The North Face, said in a statement. The money will fund the UN's climate secretariat, which will lose money under Trump.

"The bulk of the decisions which drive U.S. climate action in the aggregate are made by cities, states, businesses, and civil society", Bloomberg wrote in a draft letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

"As cities, we will not let the decision stand in the way of us tackling this environmental, economic, and national security issue for our children and grandchildren".

Other elected officials in Arkansas felt differently.

World leaders, scientists and even politicians in his own country have blasted him for his decision to turn his back on the climate change promise.

According to an article in the MIT Technology Review, Donald Trump and his team quoted figures from an earlier MIT study which was done a year before the Paris Climate Agreement was signed and therefore could not factor in the emission pledges of all the signatories to the accord.

Not only does the United States contribute about 15 per cent of carbon emissions per annum, the decision weakens an global consensus that rising levels of greenhouse gases need an urgent response. "In order to send a signal to the worldwide community, and to uphold our obligations to current and future generations, we encourage you to continue to aggressively address the threat of climate change and abide by this global effort", the lawmakers wrote in the letter.

Trump held out the prospect of renegotiating the Paris accord or reaching a new deal "on terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people, its taxpayers". India will be allowed to double its coal production by 2020. At state level, in cities, in businesses and communities around the country the move away from fossil fuels is well underway. "Going forward, we need to focus on a true all-of-the-above energy strategy to include clean-burning Alaska natural gas, which if exported to countries in Asia would positively reduce global emissions".

In 2015, Obama described climate change as a "major threat" to the USA, to which Trump responded by saying that was "one of the dumbest statements I've ever heard in politics - in the history of politics as I know it". "I can assure you that France will not give up the fight".
