Revitalization of the brownfield properties along the Honolulu High-Capacity Transit Corridor Project will support sustainable, compact and mixed-use development that encourages higher densities and energy conservation, as well as promoting the use of transit, walking and cycling.
Other communities in the Pacific Northwest picked for the latest round of EPA brownfields grants include Medford, Central Point and Grants Pass; St. Helens; and Ontario, Nyssa and Vale.
The EPA completed remediation of almost 3,000 residential properties, relocated four communities, remediated approximately 3.2 million tons of mining waste and affected soil, and plugged more than 50 abandoned wells.
Emmett S. Dunbar, Development Director for the Town of Rockingham said: "The BFADC is very excited about the $200,000 EPA Brownfield Grant being awarded to clean up the Robertson Paper Mill in Rockingham". On Wednesday, the city got some more good news for redevelopment: it's one of two in the state to get $300,000 that will go toward redeveloping blighted sitesLi Arellano Jr.
There also should be funding to update a brownfields inventory and education, according to a news release from the state. Sterling has applied for the assessment grant without success since 2011, looking to jump-start the remediation process with the Lawrence Brothers building.
Some of the funds may be used to clean up contamination at the old Howell School, a Brownfields site that a developer is still working to renovate and turn into a senior living development. But a local health care clinic overcame that reluctance to assess and redevelop a local brownfield property.
The EPA's Brownfield Assessment program aims to clean up former industrial areas and spur economic development. The grants, which were announced Wednesday, will be available for use beginning October 1, when the city's current three-year grant cycle from the EPA concludes.
"It really helps in property negotiations", Mckinney said.
They were among the 172 organizations across the nation that received Brownfields grants.
EPA's remedial action levels for lead at the USS Lead Superfund site are 400 ppm for residential sites and 800 ppm for industrial or commercial properties, according to a 2012 record of decision. A study of areas surrounding 48 brownfields sites shows an estimated $29 million to $97 million in additional tax revenue was generated for local governments in a single year after cleanup.
"As of May 2017, more than 124,759 jobs and $24 billion of public and private funding have been leveraged as a result of assessment grants and other EPA brownfields grants", an EPA release reported.
"Every dollar towards brownfields clean-up in the Eastern Crescent gives back $18 in jobs and economic opportunities for the community", he said.
