Coronation Street: see Bethany secretly meet with Nathan - watch the scene

"It's going to be really long road to recovery for Bethany, and I think speaking to charities and people this happened to, it's quite clear they still haven't got over [what they went through but] they have come to terms with what's happened to them".

Coronation Street viewers will no doubt be delighted to see Bethany get justice following her awful ordeal, as many have been deeply affected by the upsetting scenes, taking to Twitter to describe the plot line as "sick" and "brutal", with some even making complaints to Ofcom.

As Bethany's family are about to find out the extent of what she has been through, viewers are hopeful that it will spell the end of the teen's abuse.

Meanwhile another spoke of how, despite the gangr rape scene being incredibly distressing, it was important for Corrie to show that this goes on in real life.

Lucy Fallon - who plays the role of 16-year-old Bethany - has spoken out about the criticism.

"We have got some plans for her and when the scales do fall from her eyes she takes power and responsibility back".

"I definitely want to keep Lucy central to the show", she explained, "as she has shone through this and Tina O'Brien has just been fantastic too".

However, Lucy reiterated that her character will have to take care of herself first.

But viewers may see Bethany rescued soon, as Shona, who had been attacked after trying to report Nathan, tracked down David Platt to tell him that his niece was in trouble. "But it's more tragic to know that girls go through this in real life, so awful". "I thought she was just going to say that she really likes Corrie, but she said 'I was sexually abused by my dad when I was younger". she got really upset and said she really appreciated what I had done.

"I definitely want to keep Lucy central to the show because she has shone through all of this", she said.

Nathan - who was arrested in last Friday's episode of the ITV soap - has obviously been released on bail thanks to the help of his co-conspirator Neil, who is also a serving police officer.
