Watch Megadeth Pay Tribute to Chris Cornell With Live Cover of 'Outshined'

Although a full autopsy is not yet complete, People noted that the medical examiner ruled Cornell's death a suicide.

Rocker Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and later Audioslave, killed himself by hanging.

"His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause", Cornell's rep said in a statement. "There is no additional information at this time".

The "I Am The Highway" singer was found with a band around his neck inside a MGM Grand casino hotel room around midnight, according to police.

Cornell, who's known for his unique voice and wide vocal range, became famous as the lead singer of Soundgarden, a Seattle Grunge Scene band that formed in 1984, although their first major hits, "Spoonman" and "Black Hole Sun", appeared on the 1994 album "Superunknown".

The ex-front man of grunge band Soundgarden, along with his ex-bandmates, was credited as among the pioneers of the grunge music genre and subculture that had emerged from Seattle in the early '90s, together with Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Alice in Chains. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Record.

"It was clear that something wasn't right with the 52-year-old Cornell during the Fox performance", says Ashley Zlatopolsky.

As the tragic news of Chris Cornell's death continues to sink in, musicians near and far are paying tribute in their own way - some taking to Twitter, while others, such as Dave Mustaine and Megadeth, are showing their love in concert. Soundgarden reunited in 2012.

Cornell told The West Australian in late 2015: "There is a difference when you're writing an album that's completely stripped down, where the emotional connection to the singer is the most important thing".

Cornell also released four solo studio albums and a solo live album.

After the band broke up in 1997, Cornell pursued a solo career - though only for a few years.

Cornell's wife Vicky Karayiannis became anxious when Cornell didn't pick up his phone after the show.

His theme song for 2006's James Bond film Casino Royale broke into the Top 10 in the United Kingdom singles chart.
