Trump Paris Deal Pullout Likely to Weaken Global Cooperation

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has announced his resignation from Donald Trump's business advisory council following the president's decision to pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

While Trump said the United States would be willing to rejoin the accord if it could obtain more favorable terms, the three European leaders said the agreement cannot be renegotiated, "since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economics".

After pulling the USA out from the climate agreement, Trump said he would start talks to re-enter the accord with what he called a more "fair" deal, but the president was immediately rebuked by several European governments.

Apple CEO Tim Cook says he tried to talk President Trump into keeping the the Paris climate accord but "it wasn't enough".

The Paris accord had never included binding limits on the amounts of greenhouse gases that nations signing up to it could produce per year, Tabari recalled.

"For us, our position on the Paris agreement. we need a framework like that to address the risks of climate change", Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods told reporters on the sidelines of the company's annual general meeting on Wednesday. However, he added, "The clean energy revolution is well underway and can't be halted by President Trump's ill-informed choice". "Together, we will stand by the Paris Agreement, we will implement the Paris Agreement".

Climate change is real and we all share a responsibility to fight it.

Calling it a "self-inflicted major economic wound", Trump complained that the agreement allows other countries to receive monetary aid from the U.S., thereby putting the country at a "great financial disadvantage".

"We're getting out. And we will start to renegotiate and we'll see if there's a better deal".

The Co-ordinator of the Pacific Islands Climate Action Network Krishneil Narayan said not even Mr Trump could derail action on climate change. "On behalf of the people of New York City, and alongside mayors across the country, I am committing to honour the goals of the Paris agreement with an executive order in the coming days, so our city can remain a home for generations to come".

On Twitter, Cook further criticized Trump's move, tweeting: "Decision to withdraw from the #ParisAgreeement was wrong for our planet".

Iger served on Trump's Strategic and Policy Forum, a group of business leaders who offer the president advice. "Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world", Musk said.

Trump's decision does not invalidate the entire agreement.

Scientists say Earth is likely to reach more risky levels of warming sooner as a result of the president's decision because America's pollution contributes so much to rising temperatures. And for the nations that committed themselves to that future, the Paris agreement opened the floodgates for businesses, scientists, and engineers to unleash high-tech, low-carbon investment and innovation on an unprecedented scale.

Trump has already moved to dismantle Obama-era climate change regulations, including the US Clean Power Plan aimed at reducing emissions from main coal-fired power plants.

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, responded in support.
