But after the show's 2009 ratings reportedly reached lows not seen since the 1991-1992 season, Pelley helped boost them.
Senior national correspondent Anthony Mason had been filling in for Pelley during his absence at the news program.
CBS shares were down almost 1% in morning trading Tuesday.
Mason has served as among the main fill-in anchors for Pelley.
Guthrie added that a source told her Pelley is "thrilled" to go back to devote his full attention to 60 Minutes, but wasn't pleased with how his departure from CBS Evening News came about. To a certain degree, the CBS newscast has been attempting to improve ratings for quite some time. "It's not the correct way to treat the face of CBS News".
Pelley succeeded Katie Couric in June 2011 and remained the show's anchor.
David Rhodes, president of CBS News, thanked Mr. Pelley "for his commitment to the journalism of this broadcast every night these past six years". He's expected to continue working with CBS on the newsmagazine, but will no longer host the network's daily newscasts.
