The Cleveland Indians activated Corey Kluber from the disabled list on Thursday and optioned fellow right-hander Shawn Armstrong to Triple-A Columbus. Manaea has encountered Cleveland once as a rookie a year ago, where he threw seven innings of one-run ball in a win at home.
Back on the mound, Cleveland's ace was as cool and calculating as ever. Clevinger is coming off a poor showing, allowing four runs in five innings.
"It's nice to have him back, which kind of gives everyone a lift", Indians manager Terry Francona said. Zimmer just beat the return throw to home. "I thought he threw the ball really well". "He was crisp right from the get-go".
Daniel Robertson's grounder was botched by Healy at third, allowing Ramirez to score Cleveland's fourth unearned run, good for a 5-0 lead.
"You know, those things seem to be a little more amusing when you're winning than when you're losing", Francona said.
His 14 strikeouts were the second-most in the majors this season and the most in the American League.
Oakland third baseman Trevor Plouffe struck out twice against Bauer and whiffed four times in the game.
Their freaky sixth looked more Little League than major league. Santana alertly dashed home from third after A's catcher Josh Phegley threw to first in an attempt to retire Zimmer.
The Indians added three more runs in the seventh inning off reliever John Axford.
"At times as a group things get contagious, whether it's the strikeouts, whether it's the errors and now you start thinking about what you don't want to happen as opposed to what you want to happen, and guys get a little bit tight", Melvin said. I don't think that this is just a good streak for him.
"You saw our two biggest problems today".
Afterward, the typically stoic Kluber didn't want to make too much of his outing.
"To be able to go out there and pitch well without running into any issues, it's a relief", Kluber said.
The Athletics finished the game with almost as many passed balls as (two) and as many errors (three) as hits (two), which is typically not a formula for a victory. He limited Oakland to two hits and one walk over his six scoreless frames. A's RHP Jesse Hahn pitched 5 1/3 innings, throwing 75 pitches on a rehab assignment for Class-A Stockton on Wednesday.
Indians: OF Lonnie Chisenhall (concussion) ran the bases Wednesday. Francona said Chisenhall will spend another day "going through a full-team workout" before being evaluated by a doctor on Friday. Michael Brantley followed with another single to left, only this time, Canha had it roll under his glove, allowing two runs to score and the Indians to take an 8-0 lead.
Athletics: Oakland opens a three-game home series with Andrew Triggs facing Washington's Stephen Strasburg. Cleveland is 20-7 in Kluber's last 27 starts and 14-4 in their last 18 games against the AL West while the over is 8-2-1 in Kluber's last 11 starts against the AL West. Cleveland is 1-4 in Kluber's last 5 starts against Oakland.
