Hundreds protest Paris climate decision outside White House

Within minutes of Trump's remarks, the leaders of France, Germany and Italy issued a joint statement saying that the Paris climate accord was "irreversible" and could not be renegotiated, reported The New York Times.

Brown joined Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington state and Gov. Andrew Cuomo of NY to form the U.S. Climate Alliance to uphold the Paris climate agreement, a pact involving almost 200 nations aimed at slowing the warming of the planet.

In a statement Thursday, former President Barack Obama suggested that California and like-minded states could benefit from an agreement that Trump has now rejected.

"New Zealand has stood up to the U.S. on nuclear weapons; it's now time to show the same moral leadership on climate change", said Green Party Co-leader James Shaw.

"The biggest significance is what this means for USA leadership in the world in the longer term".

Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso drew parallels to the US setting up a plan to establish the League of Nations after World War I, only to back out later.

Trump said America was "getting out" of a deal he said imposed "draconian" burdens costing millions of USA jobs and billions of dollars. He described the pact as "very unfair" to the United States and beneficial to other major polluters, like China and India.

Musk's decision came after Trump announced earlier Thursday that he was pulling the USA out of the historic worldwide agreement that set global goals for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The United States will join Nicaragua and Syria as the only countries that are not part of the agreement. Canete also predicted that the European Union would seek new alliances from the world's largest economies to the most vulnerable island states, as well as US businesses and individuals supportive of the accord.

Moments after Trump announced his decision, several global leaders came out in support of landmark Paris accord and commit to protect the planet "with or without America".

"I don't believe fighting reality is a good strategy", California Governor Jerry Brown said in a statement announcing the formation of the United States Climate Alliance.

Piers Morgan said that while he didn't agree with Trump's decision it " sounds to me like he's just trying to cut a better deal". He said: "Leadership means fighting climate change together".

The Paris accord had never included binding limits on the amounts of greenhouse gases that nations signing up to it could produce per year, Tabari recalled. He added, "In addition to being disappointed, I'm also angry".

Fiji's prime minister said Trump's announcement was "deeply disappointing".

"Once again, President Trump has continued to keep his word to the American people both on specific initiatives like the Paris Accord and his broader promise to put our citizens and America first", she said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his disappointment in a telephone call with Trump.

"Industry must now lead and not depend on government", Immelt said.

The Paris agreement commits the United States and 187 other countries to keeping rising global temperatures below 2C above pre-industrial levels.

MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE - 12:05 p.m.) The Climate Change Commission said the country "is deeply troubled" by the United States withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement and "appeals that they reconsider their position".

"I believe the United States of America should be at the front of the pack", the former president added, explaining that it was USA leadership that made the agreement possible.

"The future is in newer, cleaner and renewable technologies, not in fossil fuels", said Venki Ramakrishnan, president of Britain's Royal Society.

"There is a massive national and global interest in achieving that and maintaining energy".
