Arsenal Misses UCL Slot First Time in 20 Years

Wenger has refused to confirm he will stay on as manager next season and, after missing out on the Premier League's top four for the first time since 1996, the Frenchman said the uncertainty had not helped.

"We played since January in a very hard environment for different reasons", said Wenger.

City routed Watford 5-0 with Sergio Aguero netting a brace in the win that ensured their direct entry into the Champions League, while Manchester United beat Crystal Palace 2-0 to finish sixth with goals to Paul Pogba and Joshua Harrop.

Speaking after the match Wenger admitted that the season-long speculation over his future had contributed to the "horrendous psychological environment" that his team had found themselves trapped in during the early months of 2017.

Wenger's contract at the Emirates Stadium expires this summer but the 67-year-old, who has delivered three Premier Leagues and six FA Cups to North London, has remained defiant throughout despite facing protests from supporters over his future. But playing in those sort of occasions and in those big games is important. We are professional people and part of being professional is as well to perform when the environment is not positive.

"The attitude he has they were talking whether it's disturbing, I'm sure he must have his moments like every single player and especially big players, but this is a guy where you have to build a team around".

"I would be in the Wenger camp".

Goalkeeper Brad Guzan had by far the most touches of any Middlesbrough player but majority ended with him launching the ball upfield as the visitors conceded 74 per cent possession in the first half. He's not at fault if we didn't reach the Champions League, it's the technical department who are responsible for that.

"I am very proud of what they have done, the way they responded and finished the season".

Spurs finished as the league's top scorers and with its tightest defence, but will end the season with nothing to show for it bar a second-place finish.

But of what happens in the cup final, Wenger insisted that the squad doesn't need a major overhaul next season.

"I don't think that's why the team didn't perform. A lot of newspapers are saying he will stay and it he does I'm happy with that".
