PTI EXCLUSIVE: Russias ties with India will not be diluted

Meeting with the President of Spain Mariano Rajoy, PM Modi said "Terrorism is a challenge for all of our societies, we get to hear a lot about terror attacks these days".

Modi further said that, Russian equipment and technology is the mainstay of India's defence forces and the cooperation in the military technical field is a pillar of great strength in India-Russia relations.

Modi thanked Putin for his "active role" in getting India SCO membership.

Modi also gave a broad overview of the economic reforms undertaken in India, including the GST.

Modi is likely to discuss two-way trade between India and Russian Federation, which dropped to Dollars 8 billion in 2015, despite an ambitious target of achieving USD 30 billion by 2030. A traditional ally of India, Russia has lately developed its ties with China and Pakistan. "It's very easy for us", Modi said on Tuesday. "New centres of influence and new engines of growth are emerging", he said adding that India and Russian Federation were "natural partners" in fighting terrorism, and promoting a multipolar global system.

Welcoming Modi, Putin said, "the most important thing is the trust and friendship in our relationship between our countries and our people".

This will be the first Indian prime ministerial visit to Spain in almost 30 years after the visit of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1988.

He was also to meet Spanish business leaders as part of his push to drum up more foreign investment in India, the world's fastest-growing major economy.

According to the statement, Modi and Rajoy "expressed their strong commitment to reinforce their cooperation in the fight against terrorism, through regular bilateral consultations and cooperation and in the worldwide fora".

Modi, the first Indian prime minister to visit Spain since 1992, met the European country's top leadership and said India and Spain maintain close and cordial relations and he sees great potential in this collaboration.

Modi in his article said that, India and Russian Federation are "natural partners" in fighting terrorism and have been together in times - good and bad.
