Angelique Kerber became the first top seed to lose in the opening round at Roland Garros as tearful Petra Kvitova swept to victory in her first match since surviving a knife attack which nearly ended her career.
Kerber, who ended Serena Williams' stay atop the WTA rankings previous year, was gone from Roland Garros by lunchtime on Day 1, putting up little resistance while being beaten 6-2, 6-2 by 40th-ranked Ekaterina Makarova of Russian Federation.
The Russian, who is now based in Barcelona at the 4Slam academy, said: " He gave me a lot.
She made it to the third round of the U.S. Open in 2016, and the second round there in 2014. But this year has been much more of a struggle: The German has a 19-13 record, losing 4 of her past 6 matches.
Murray will be the second match on the Philippe Chatrier show court following British women's number one Johanna Konta, who is looking to reach the French Open second round for the first time against Chinese Taipei's Su-Wei Hsieh.
- The match was halted on Monday due to poor light and rain and play resumed on Tuesday with the scores tied at a set apiece. But that was about it.
The risky Makarova took full advantage of Kerber's lack of confidence on clay, wrapping up victory by a comfortable margin.
"It was really tough".
"I'm very happy with the team I have around me when he isn't there", said Murray, who has Jamie Delgado alongside him throughout the year. "I was also fighting with my emotion". A year ago was a great match against Basilashvili in four sets.
But the cherry on top came as she won 6-3, 6-2 against Julia Boserup. "It was a decent start, considering obviously how I played in the build-up". "I won already, before".
Kvitova was playing for the first time since she was stabbed during an attempted burglary at her home in the Czech Republic in December. Murray dropped a set in his French Open first-round match, but otherwise was unfazed by Andrey Kuznetsov.
"It's a pleasure to be here".
"I'm just not playing good tennis and need to try to work out how to turn it around".
"I'm just saying that, you know, there are ways of doing things".
Juan Martin del Potro made a successful return to Roland Garros after a five-year absence, setting aside injury concerns to sail through 6-2 6-1 6-4 against fellow Argentine Guido Pella.
Several members of her entourage wore black T-shirts with white capital letters on the front that read, "Courage".
Mattek-Sands, who is back in the third round for the first time since 2013, will next face Samantha Stosur.
After briefly threatening a recovery in the eighth game, in which she held two break points, Kerber meekly surrendered the first set with a forehand that never looked like clearing the net.
