Kentucky visit highlights Gamecocks' 2017-18 SEC basketball schedule

Late last week, Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs seemed open to the idea of swapping divisions with Mizzou to the SEC East.

"I think it's a legitimate conversation for us to have at some point as a league", Jacobs said.

"Things change. We have to keep our eye on what's changing". "If that means we stay in the West for the next 20 years - however it works out". Aside from Alabama, Auburn's two biggest historical rivals are Georgia, which it plays every year, and Florida, which will only visit Jordan-Hare Stadium once every 12 years in the current schedule format.

SC comes off a record-breaking 2016-17 season in which the Gamecocks won their first NCAA Tournament game since 1973, en route to advancing to the school's first Final Four and a school-record 26 wins along the way.

Along with the home-and-home games, the Crimson Tide will host Arkansas, Missouri, South Carolina and Tennessee, with road games at Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. The Tigers and Bulldogs meet every season as a permanent inter-division rivalry, but Auburn hasn't played the Gamecocks since 2014, the Volunteers since 2013, Vanderbilt since 2012 and the Gators since 2011.

"If you look at the way the map's set up, it's kind of like common sense", Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said.

Jacobs shot down the notion Auburn wants to move because the Eastern Division is less challenging in football than the West. Now, he is doing a lot more than acknowledging the logic in the move. In fact, the Florida-Auburn rivalry used to be one of the best in the SEC. There are a lot of rivalries involved.

"I really only address that in conversations with (reporters)", Sankey said. "That's probably far away if that ever does happen".

The "moving parts" are plenty.

Jacobs also believes there's a realistic chance that the SEC will listen and agree with the prospective move.

DESTIN, Fla. - SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said he expects the new early signing period in ... "Since we last had our scheduling discussion, there's a 13-member committee now that determines who the top four teams are", Jacobs said.

Texas A&M, which has drawn off-season Top 25 attention from numerous media outlets, stands to return one of the SEC's formidable rosters to the hardwood for the 2017-18 campaign as the Aggies bring back four starters and 10 total players, representing 82.3 percent of the Aggies' total scoring output.

Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson were both at Auburn during Davis' recruitment in 2015.
