UFC president Dana White had already stated earlier this month that Manuwa would be on UFC 214 in case the 205-pound title fight between champ Daniel Cormier and ex-titleholder Jon Jones, which is scheduled to headline the card, falls apart.
Jones' return after his most recent indiscretion, a failed drugs test in the run-up to UFC 200 last summer, takes place in July when he runs it back against his fiercest rival, Daniel Cormier. The Las Vegas-based promotion confirmed the light heavyweight bout on Wednesday.
Oezdemir (14-1) is just three days removed from a stunning first-round knockout over highly touted prospect Misha Cirkunov.
Oezdemir is now on a four fight winning streak and is coming off a win over Cirkunov, whom he defeated 28-second knockout. The win over Cirkunov propelled Oezdemir's young Octagon record to 2-0, aided by an equally big split-decision upset Oezdemir earned over Ovince Saint Preux in the Switzerland native's UFC debut.
The quick finish saw the Swiss fighter campaign for his third bout of the year against Manuwa, something with which he has been duly rewarded. Cormier is set to defend the light heavyweight title against Jones in the main event.
UFC 214 is also expected to feature Cris "Cyborg" Justino's shot at featherweight gold, though the details on this fight remain scarce.
Manuwa (17-2), meanwhile, rides the momentum of back-to-back bonus-winning knockouts over Saint Preux and Corey Anderson into the bout.
