European Union leader urges Trump not to ditch Paris climate deal

The Agreement calls on countries to combat climate change and to accelerate and intensify the actions and investments needed for a sustainable low carbon future, and to adapt to the increasing impacts of climate change. Trump has changed his mind on large decisions before, even after previously signaling a move in the opposite direction. Now EU and Chinese leaders have banded together in an unusual alliance that emphasizes the absence of the United States - the world's second biggest emitter of carbon dioxide after China - from the playing field. Virtually every nation voluntarily committed to steps aimed at curbing global emissions of "greenhouse" gases. The last time it happened - when the USA quit the Kyoto Protocol more than a decade and a half ago - the Bush administration saw its relationship with its allies become chillier.
Environmental groups criticized the planned withdrawal.
The UN chief also said that he will work to with UN Member States mobilise national and worldwide resources for adaptation, resilience, and the implementation of national climate action plans, and called for new and strengthened partnerships, including with the private sector and through North-South, South-South and triangular cooperation. Friends of the Earth said it would make America the world's "foremost climate villain".
Trump is set to announce on Thursday whether or not he will abandon the global climate agreement, as reports swirled about his intentions. A future president can reverse Trump's domestic policies, and can recommit the United States to the Paris Agreement.
"But of course, we also hope to do this in cooperation with others", added Li.
During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump blasted the accord, and called global warming a hoax aimed at weakening US industry.
Trump has repeatedly expressed doubts about climate change, at times calling it a hoax to weaken USA industry. But a USA withdrawal from the deal would give China more opportunity to burnish its image as a global leader.
In a speech the day before, Juncker said world leaders had tried to warn Trump that he could not exit the Paris Agreement - ratified by the United States past year - overnight. He also had to navigate a split among his advisers.
The Paris climate agreement was established during a 2015 conference in the French capital.
"As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change put it: 'Human influence on the climate system is clear".
Trump's daughter, Ivanka, favors staying in, the official said, and has sought to ensure her father heard all sides in the debate.
Johnson told Sky News that Britain still wants the U.S.to take the lead in fighting climate change and called on individual US states to keep making progress on that front.
Oil majors Shell and Exxon Mobil have also supported the pact along with a number of Republican lawmakers. The market reaction reflects concerns, raised by some coal companies in recent months, that a USA exit from the Paris agreement could unleash a global backlash against coal interests.
