Donald Trump ready to withdraw from Paris climate agreement, reports say

Tesla CEO Elon Musk also threatened to step down from White House advisory councils if Mr. Trump withdraws from the deal. Aram... the White House says nothing has yet been finalized, but multiple reports, citing government officials, suggest that President Trump is about to make good on his campaign pledge. World leaders and business figures had recently urged him to reconsider, but by Wednesday morning, reports began to surface that Trump had made a decision to leave the pact.

The Trump administration may or may not signal the mode of withdrawal if it does, in fact, announce that it will pull out of the agreement this week.

The only other two countries in the United Nations that did not support the deal are Nicaragua and Syria.

The US committed to reducing carbon emissions by 26-28% in a decade in signing onto the agreement.

Barack Obama had used his authority as president to join the Paris accord without a vote in the Legislature. Countries are permitted under the treaty to change their goals and there is no punishment for missing targets.

"We will continue to move forward, I expect that the next president, whether it's three years or seven years from now, will take up this cause again", Walsh said.

- China said Thursday that it will work with the European Union to uphold the worldwide agreement on climate change even if the US pulls out.

Even in regions of the US where coal is plentiful, electric utilities are increasingly shifting to cheaper, cleaner-burning natural gas.

During Mr Trump's overseas trip last week, European leaders pressed him to keep the U.S. in the landmark agreement.

The U.S.is the second worst emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, according to the European Commission's emissions database, behind only China. But they're also expanding their portfolios to include renewable energy sources. Even fossil fuel companies such as Exxon Mobil, BP and Shell say the United States should abide by the deal.

While not mentioning the U.S.by name, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters that climate change is a "global challenge" that no country can ignore.

"China in recent years has stayed true to its commitment", said Li, speaking in Berlin Wednesday. The exit could take as long as one to nearly four years.

The Group of Seven summit in Italy on Friday and Saturday revealed a clear split between Trump and the other leaders over honouring the 2015 agreement. "It looks like that attempt failed", Juncker said. Trump met Wednesday with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who has favored remaining in the agreement. Chief strategist Steve Bannon supports an exit, as does Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt. The president has pledged to reverse decades of decline in coal mining, which now accounts for fewer than 75,000 U.S.jobs.

Trump's influential daughter Ivanka Trump's preference is to stay, but she has made it a priority to establish a review process so her father would hear from all sides, said a senior administration official.

"So I can only reiterate the well-known position that the German government unequivocally supports the Paris climate agreement and is campaigning for it to be quickly implemented and hopes the United States of America remains committed to this agreement", she added.

The departure of the USA would make it significantly harder to avoid temperatures rising by more than two degrees Celsius by 2100, according to climate modeling by US not-for-profit Climate Interactive.
