U.S veterans honored at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery

Following the parade, the VFW and America Legion held a memorial ceremony at the John Phillip Sousa Memorial Band Shell, honoring veterans of all American wars.

"Memorial Day to me is showing my respect for all those who came before me and fell before", she said.

The Rev. Gary Parker of Saint Stephen's Church opened the ceremony, citing the importance of remembering military men and women responsible for the country's freedom.

Winter Garden resident and former city commission Theo Graham was recognized for his dedication at the city's annual Memorial Day ceremony Monday, May 29.

As part of a Memorial Day tradition, soldiers placed 280,000 flags on the headstones of fallen service members at Arlington National Cemetery.

"It's a chance to remember and reflect on why we are doing it and who served", said volunteer Alice Smith.

"Everyone is more in tune with veterans, more so than when I was in the service", he said.

Tiles are available for purchase for $150 each and will always be available for veterans and their family members or friends to honor those who served and fought for their country, Eaton explained. But they, too, cringe when they hear "Happy Memorial Day".

She coordinates the Houston chapter of the Memorial Day Flowers Foundation, which she joined four years before her father, a Vietnam veteran, passed away.

Her young grandsons, just like Shai El, might not understand what Memorial Day is all about, but rose by rose and year by year, she knows they will one day.
