"Their names were Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and Ricky John Best".
It would deeply honor Taliesin's sacrifice, which has been amplified by the millions of voices who have supported our family in response to this tragedy.
Police identified the suspect as Jeremy Joseph Christian, who has already been booked on two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of second-degree intimidation, and being a felon in possession of a restricted weapon. They had come to the defense of two teenage girls, one of them a Muslim wearing a headscarf and the other an African-American.
Christian then allegedly stabbed the three men.
Wheeler said the three men who intervened on the train Friday were willing to give their lives to stand up for people they didn't know. Best, who served 23 years in the U.S. Army, left behind four children.
He said: "They need to take care, not just of their own, but everyone in the world". Before leaving the train, Christian stabbed Namkai-Meche and Best again.
As Namkai-Meche was being loaded on a stretcher, Macy stayed with him. Her son and another man died.
"I just didn't want him to be alone", Macy said. "We're here", Macy said.
The girls were scared and moved to the back of the train while a stranger jumped in to help. Wheeler urged organizers to cancel a "Trump Free Speech Rally" at a downtown park in Portland next weekend, saying they are inappropriate and could be risky because he fears they will attract right-wing protesters.
Trump's message, sent just before he attended a Memorial Day ceremony at the Arlington military cemetery near Washington, came amid rising pressure on the president to condemn the slayings of the two men, dubbed "heroes" by local media and law enforcement in Portland.
Prohibiting a rally based on the political views of demonstrators would be unconstitutional even though "our hearts are broken" following the stabbings, said Mat Dos Santos, the legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon.
The Portland Mercury, one of the city's alternative weeklies, posted an article on its website saying Christian showed up at a free speech march in late April with a baseball bat to confront protesters and the bat was confiscated by police.
The University of California, Berkeley, has been criticized for canceling an appearance by conservative commentator Ann Coulter in April and another by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos in February.
