Portland mayor calls for cancellation of free-speech rally

Two people were killed on Friday and one wounded on a Portland light rail train after being stabbed by a white supremacist.

Immediately upon entering the Multnomah County Justice Center Courthouse in OR for his arraignment on Tuesday, Jeremy Christian loudly interrupted the ongoing proceedings from inside his holding chamber, as two officers flanked him.

Following the tragic stabbing on a MAX train in Portland that left two people dead and another injured, the online community stepped up in a big way. She said he was being "belligerent and loud" and made anti-Muslim and racist slurs.

The suspect was slated to answer charges Tuesday afternoon of murder, attempted murder, intimidation and being a felon in possession of a restricted weapon.

The attacks occurred hours before the start of Ramadan, a month-long Muslim holy period of fasting, prayer and charity.

Christian is accused of slashing the throats of three men on board a MAX train as it approached the Hollywood Transit Center on Friday in Northeast Portland.

Court documents from Tuesday said Christian "reports he is transient and does not know the last time he had a permanent address", according to CNN.

"I hope we rise to the memory of these two gentlemen who lost their lives", Wheeler said, adding that he appreciated Trump's words but stressing actions. "Shining bright star I love you forever", she wrote.

Police said they'll examine what appears to be Christian's extremist ideology, including social media posts indicating an affinity for Nazis and political violence.

At a vigil Saturday near the train station, almost 1,000 people gathered around a mound of bouquets and photographs, praising the men as heroes and saying they hoped others would stand up against hate.

"There will be speakers exercising their free speech, live music, flags, and an uplifting experience to bring back strength and courage to those who believe in freedom", according to the Facebook event page for Saturday's rally.

Micah David-Cole Fletcher, 21, suffered a slash wound to his neck and chest as he tried to confront Christian and help the young women. They tried to give Namkai Meche CPR and pray with him until medics arrived.

Meche's mother, Asha Deliverance, took to Facebook on Saturday to pay tribute to her son's heroic act. Wheeler urged organizers to cancel a "Trump Free Speech Rally" in Portland and other similar events next weekend, saying they are inappropriate and could be unsafe. Her daughter is African-American and was with a friend who was wearing a hijab, she said.

Event organizer Joey Gibson has distanced himself from Christian, and told The Oregonian/OregonLive "we were clearly asking (Christian) to leave" the April event.

US President Donald Trump has sent out a tweet commemorating the victims of a vicious knife attack in Portland on Friday (27 May) after heightened calls for him to respond.

Christian allegedly targeted the teens, one of whom wore a hijab, with racial and religious insults.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler also said he is trying to ensure that a permit is not issued for a June 10 protest, which is reported by ABC Portland affiliate KATU-TV to be called #MarchAgainstSharia.
