Memorial Day Parade schedule

The Grand Rapids Memorial Day Parade is this evening at 7 pm. Debbie Stabenow, who said she was honored to pay tribute to all fallen soldiers and to be able to introduce Ryan.

President of the Ladies Auxiliary, Inez Henry, opened the ceremony by speaking about the meaning of Memorial Day, and mentioned that is a sacred day for all men and women who have served in the military.

Jackson received a thunderous ovation during his introduction. He is the commander of the VFW Post 9422. "I know that's important to be with your family, but when you're with your family, remember the veterans".

Other speakers included Francis Blanchette, who gave the invocation, and Lynn Warner, who offered a benediction.

Exeter: Governor Gina Raimondo will be joined by members of the congressional delegation including Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Congressmen David Cicilline and Jim Langevin to commemorate Memorial Day at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. "These honored dead gave the most precious gift they had, life itself". Stabenow also brought attention to the importance of the U.S. Coast Guard, both to MI as the Great Lakes State and to the country as a whole.

State Rep. Charles Ferraro, R-West Haven, spoke about the holiday's history, while state Rep. Mike Dimassa, D-West Haven, said finding words befitting a person's sacrifice can be challenging.

"We've been coming for over 20 years because our son, who's autistic, just loves this", said attendee Eric Blackledge. "That's what it's all about".

The Deep River parade has been canceled due to rain.

Other veterans echoed that sentiment. He recommended people on Monday thank veterans, to whom they owe "a great debt of gratitude". "They fight for us to be free", said Keidrick Gary. "I always say, I could not do what I do if it wasn't for what you have done".
