Finally, something to cheer for Arsenal

Jeremy Corbyn has taken time out from general election campaigning to offer his support to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Speaking to BT Sport before the FA Cup final, Ferdinand said: "People were anxious about him playing wing-back against Manchester City in the semi-final and he proved everyone wrong with a man of the match performance".

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he remained in the dark about his future after steering his side to a magnificent 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

A formal announcement of Wenger's new contract is expected to come on Wednesday.

"It's the board who has to decide who will lead the club in the future and I have after to decide if they want me, do I say yes or no". I think I have shown you that I have exactly the same commitment.

Arsenal produced their best display for years and Mertesacker said that the high level the team reached was testament to Wenger's enduring ability. It would be ridiculous that 20 years depends on one game and the future of the club depends on one game. So, for me, the contract does not have a special meaning.

Hartson told 5Live: "I think there will be protests if he stays".

"I don't know for sure but there is a lot of attention in this moment", Conte said.

Earlier this month the Football Association introduced new sanctions for "successful deception of a match official" ahead of next season that will see players found guilty of diving to win a penalty or get an opponent sent off handed a retrospective two-match suspension.

After a hard season in which Arsenal came fifth in the league, their worst finish under Wenger, Mertesacker said that they realised that they had to be more competitive on the biggest stage.

"I just hope if and when he decides to go he kind of does himself because I don't want people to feel badly about him and I hope he doesn't spoil that".

FA Cup final - He also played in the show-piece event in each of those seasons, performing well against Hull City before scoring in a 4-0 win over Aston Villa in 2014/15. Amid changes within the club's management, Wenger will apparently manage to retain control over the coaching, picking the team and decision-making on transfers.
