Fallen service members in Hawaii honored on this Memorial Day

But the day has recovered some of its essence because of the rising number of dead Americans who will be honored by their families this weekend for service during wars in Iraq and Afghanistan throughout these long, bloody 15 years.

Allison Jaslow heard it a couple of times as the long holiday weekend approached - a cheerful "Happy Memorial Day!" from oblivious well-wishers. "We gave up everything so it's an honor".

Miller has been on five deployments in his career and now deployed in the Middle East. "It meant everything for me to be here because I am a soldier of the cross", Orme stated.

The American Legion Post 20 in Plattsburgh was packed with people of all ages on Monday who came out to mark Memorial Day.

A ceremony at the Central Park gazebo, which included a flag-raising, the national anthem and the pledge of allegiance concluded Mansfield's observance of Memorial Day. It's a day many of us will celebrate with a trip to the lake, the golf course or the pool or by cooking out with friends and family.

"These guys, these gals, they love their country more than life and so they gave up all", said Robert Balnicky, who fought during World War II.

"I believe that God has a special place in heaven for those who lay down their lives so others can live free of fear", he said at Arlington National Cemetery.

"Today we remember those heroes who have fallen", Klobuchar said. For many years it was called Decoration Day.

Veterans Day: This federal holiday falls on November 11 and is designated as a day to honor all who have served in the military. On Memorial Day, people wear pink sunburns and maybe their best white outfit.

Former Greensboro Mayor Bill Knight, a foundation board member and a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, told the crowd that people need to understand the real meaning of Memorial Day. However, in between the cookouts, the parades, the beach and the sun, let's take time to think about the significance of Memorial Day.
