Barcelona appoint Ernesto Valverde as their new manager

Barcelona are expected to confirm Ernesto Valverde as their new coach later on Monday after club president Josep Maria Bartomeu called a press conference for 19:00 local time.

In a statement, the club said, "Ernesto Valverde is the new FC Barcelona coach for the next two seasons".

Valverde guided Bilbao to a seventh placed finish in La Liga this season and is the ideal man to replace Enrique according to club president Josep Maria Bartomeu. "He is a hard worker and is passionate about using technology in training and in match management".

Herrera has a year left on the four-year United contract he signed in 2014, with the option for an additional year.

Valverde has the capability, the judgement, the knowledge as well as the experience.

This is not Valverde's first job in the city of Barcelona because he coached Espanyol from 2006 to 2008 where he finished as UEFA Cup runners-up. With Valverde as head coach, Athletic de Bilbao reached classification for the European Champions League, eliminating Italian Napoli. I don't know him but I've spoken to him on a few occasions.

Valverde from 1988 to 1990 competed in Barcelona and remained in the history of the club as the won the Cup winners Cup and the Spanish Cup.

The former Valencia and Olympiacos manager last week announced his departure from Atletico Bilbao with whom he won 102 of 212 games with since taking over in 2013, having previously managed them a decade earlier. "In his career he has helped his teams to no less than six trophies, five with Olympiacos and one with Athletic Club".

Valverde will be looking to boost his Barcelona side in order to make his mark, and improve on the Spanish giant's relatively poor showing last season, when it couldn't beat arch rival Real Madrid to the La Liga title.

Much anticipation and expectations await Ernesto Valverde at the Cam Nou and his performances will be judged immediately the season starts, through his summer signings and style of play.
