Angela Merkel Sounds As If She's Done With Trump And America

Trump reportedly pushed Germany on its trade deficit with the USA and admonished much of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance for failing to meet its agreed upon spending targets for collective defense.

President Donald Trump has renewed his criticism of Germany following Chancellor Angela Merkel's suggestion that her country needs to adopt a more independent stance in world affairs.

Modi, whose visit to Germany comes less than a week after Merkel provided the strongest indication yet that the European Union and the U.S. under President Trump were drifting apart, said India would play a positive role in boosting unity in the grouping.

Although Merkel has sought to dampen the notion that she wants to pivot Germany and Europe away from the United States and toward Eastern powers, Tuesday's meeting with Modi could not have been more positive and cordial. The BMW plant in SC is not only the German automaker's largest plant anywhere in the world, but also exports more cars than any other USA auto plant.

India on Tuesday thanked Germany for backing its membership bid in the Nuclear Suppliers Group as the two countries supported each other's candidature for a permanent seat in a reformed UN Security Council.

She stressed that diplomacy is not a zero-sum game and that while Berlin was building strong ties with the rising Asian powers, transatlantic ties remained "of paramount importance".

"What I said recently is due to the fact that, in the face of the present circumstances, we have additional reasons for us to realise that we have to take our fate into our hands in Europe". He praised Merkel's experience and Germany's economic example to India.

Merkel, during a campaign in Germany's southern state of Bavaria, said following the election of the U.S President Donald Trump and Brexit, Europeans "really have to take destiny into their own hands". The National Democratic Alliance government had become quite averse to signing regional or bilateral FTAs because of its assessments that many of these agreements - with the ASEAN countries, for example - have not benefited India.

On Monday, Merkel showed how seriously she is concerned about Washington's dependability under Trump by repeating the message she delivered a day earlier that the times when Europe could fully rely on others were "over to a certain extent".

Trump launched a salvo against German vehicle exports to the United States last week, saying that "the Germans are bad, very bad" during a meeting with senior European officials in Brussels, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported.

Modi, on a Berlin visit kicking off a four-nation Europe tour, pledged India's commitment to democracy and a strong European Union, and argued that failing to act against global warming would be "a morally criminal act". Trump promised during the election to tear up the landmark Paris climate accord.
