Australia's Nick Kyrgios returns the ball to Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber during their first round match of the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium, Tuesday, May 30, 2017 in Paris.
The Taiwanese player won seven points in a row to take the tie-breaker, and was the first to break in the deciding set.
Barty has now lost all nine career matches against top-20 opponents.
Third seed and 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka was an easy victor, defeating Slovakian qualifier Jozef Kovalik 6-2, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3.
There were no such problems for fifth-seeded Rome champion Elina Svitolina as the 2015 quarter-finalist defeated Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-3. "But then there were times where I felt that she did play incredibly well". I do feel I'm a better player at the end of these last few weeks on the surface than I was at the beginning and that is the most I can ask of myself: to keep improving.
- The defeat marked Konta's third consecutive first-round exit from the French Open.
Konta, ranked 8th in the world, lost in three sets despite taking the first set 6-1.
The seventh seed was looking for her first main-draw win at Roland Garros but this appeared a kind draw and she raced through the first set.
The British No 1 looked as though she would ease to victory after winning the first set in just 26 minutes on Philippe Chatrier.
Hsieh saved four break points when serving for the match and sealed her win when Konta made a return error.
