Adieu, Angie! No. 1 Kerber out of French Open in 1st round

But today's setback, albeit on a surface she has no great affection for and having made an opening-round exit in Paris a year ago, threatens to leave her season in tatters. She can likely say goodbye to her number one WTA ranking, depending on how the rest of the French Open goes.

The 31st-seeded Vinci, who ended Serena Williams' hopes of a calendar year Grand Slam by beating her in the semifinals at Flushing Meadows in 2015, lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to Olympic champion Monica Puig. But this year has been much more of a struggle: The German has a 19-13 record, losing 4 of her past 6 matches.

Grigor Dimitrov has won his first match in four years at Roland Garros to reach the second round of the clay-court major. It has become a routine for the Russian as she held her serve to love, consolidating the break in the opening game.

"This match was special to me", said Kvitova, the No. 15 seed, who had declared that just entering the French Open was a victory. "But, she played well". Before going to Roland Garros, she had promised her doctor she would stop if she felt any pain.

Five months after suffering career-threatening injuries when she was stabbed by an intruder in her home, Kvitova looked sharp and eager in a 6-3 6-2 triumph over Julia Boserup. He has also lost in the first round the last three years at Roland Garros. "At the end of the match, it was really tough as I knew she wouldn't give it to me - I had to win it", the Russian said after her victory. French player Alizé Cornet wrote, "Tears in my eyes watching @Petra_Kvitova winning her first come back match at RG so emotional and inspiring".

"Everybody knows it's not my favourite surface, but we have to play on clay", she said.

Kerber seemed to have the flawless start to the match when she prevailed in a tough marathon rally just on the first point, looking solid in her groundstrokes. "Normally I can control my emotions on the court and I'm so happy that I kind of did it, as well, this time", Kvitova added, although she admitted getting more emotional after the match. "There are a few things to improve but what can I expect after such a long time".
