With Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Gabriel and Kieran Gibbs all unavailable in a defensive selection crisis, the former Germany worldwide was named in the starting line-up by Arsene Wenger for the first time since April 2016. And they won't even be back among Europe's elite in September after finishing fifth in the Premier League; the lowest finish since Wenger took charge in 1996. This team has suffered. We knew they would play well as they have the last weeks.
Diego Costa equalised for Chelsea late in the second half, after Chelsea had lost Victor Moses to a second yellow card for diving, but Wenger's men had the flawless response as Aaron Ramsey bagged the winner three minutes later.
Wenger became the most successful manager in the competition's history.
"I'm very proud [to have record number of wins]".
Pinpointing Wenger's decision to switch to a three-man defence late in the season as the key to Arsenal's FA Cup glory, Ramsey said: "Of course I want him to stay at club".
And yet Arsenal still ended the campaign with a cup victory that Wenger puts on a par with his last Premier League success in the unbeaten 2003-04 season.
"We have a board meeting on Tuesday and I think Wednesday, Thursday it will all be clear".
"We stuck in there when it looks like things were against us", he said.
As Sanchez flicked (with his arms, mind you) the ball over Nemanja Matic and Chelsea's defensive line, Thibaut Courtois ran out towards the ball. "Sometimes I think it could be tiredness", Conte said.
"The first goal should never have been allowed - it was clearly a hand ball and then Ramsey was offside because he was interfering in play", the goalkeeper was quoted as saying by Chelsea's official website on Sunday. Offside or not is not important.
Underdogs Arsenal enjoyed a dream start although there was a huge debate about whether Sanchez's effort should have stood.
"When we went down to 10 we tried and we scored the goal".
Diego Costa revived Chelsea's hopes of a repeat of their league and FA Cup double in 2010 when Arsenal keeper David Ospina failed to keep out his deflected shot with 14 minutes left.
"There is disappointment for the final result but it can happen and there was a lot of pressure".
