She was arrested for child endangerment and her children were turned over to Child and Family Services.
Bystanders stepped in after a Utah woman locked her two children - ages five and two - into the trunk of her vehicle while she shopped at a Riverdale Wal-Mart store.
Tori Lee Castillo, 39, was arrested and charged with child abuse after police found her children aged 2 and 5 locked in her vehicle trunk, according to the Deseret News.
One witness helped the children escape the locked trunk by popping it open with an emergency latch.
According to the Riverdale Police Department, Tori Castillo was booked into the Weber County Correctional Facility in Ogden and faces child abuse charges.
Lt. Warren said child welfare got involved following the incident and the children were put in the care of a responsible party, according to the Associated Press.
Heidi, who wanted to keep her last name anonymous, was one of the witnesses. She was like, 'Mom, let me out.
"I could hear some kids crying", Heidi recounted to KSTU of when she put her ear against the vehicle. "Help!" She was screaming, crying". "Both kids just came out.they just jumped out at us", Heidi said. "Balling. They were scared", Maw said.
"It was kind of heartbreaking to see that somebody could do something so cruel", she said.
