Yankees retire Derek Jeter's number 2 jersey

Derek Jeter held a microphone and spoke without notes to the crowd that filled sold-out Yankee Stadium.

The New York Yankees retired former captain Derek Jeter's No. 2 jersey before a packed Yankee Stadium yesterday morning (Singapore time).

Yankees co-owner Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal presented the 14-time All-Star with a 14-karat white gold ring with “2” in diamonds, surrounded by diamonds.

Carlos Gomez had three hits, including a single to start the seventh, but left the game with a right hamstring strain after scoring from second base on Delino DeShields' two-out infield single that chased Oakland starter Kendall Graveman.

Check out Jeter's emotional speech towards his fans as he continues his path to another chapter of life, prosperity and as a future 1st ballot Baseball Hall Of Fame.

"We were laughing because when Bernie had his, he had the big mole", Jeter said, revealing some of the locker room subterfuge his former manager Joe Torre had only just earlier insisted was one of Jeter's best kept secrets from Yankee life. Jeter's walk-up was synonymous with the late Bob Sheppard, who's announcement "now batting, numbah two, Derek Jeter, numbah two" is as iconic as Yankee Stadium and the Yankees themselves. Because the truth is, no matter where you go in the world, when a place feels like home, as NY does to me, you never really leave. "I can still hear her voice, 'Let's go, baby!'" Senzatela said.

"It was always kind of our dream to be able to play here and play in the big leagues and playing in her home city", Bregman said. In his honor they played 2 today.

I watched Derek Jeter from the time he was in Triple-A in the town where I went to college until his last game in the majors.

He batted.308 with 111 runs scored in 158 postseason games, earning World Series MVP honors in 2000 against the crosstown rival New York Mets.

Backed by a 9-0 lead, Charlie Morton (5-2) gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings, including Matt Holliday's three-run homer in a four-run fifth (see full recap). But more importantly for embracing me since Day 1. The relationship between Jeter and A-Rod has appeared to deteriorate over the years. The Yankees had just retired his iconic No. 2.
