Southern rock trailblazer Gregg Allman dead at 69

Following the news of Gregg Allman's death Saturday at 69, musicians flocked to social media to share not only their condolences, but their memories of the long-haired singer who helped usher in a new era of southern rock.

People in Savannah and Tybee Island say they're sad to know that rock legend Gregg Allman died from health problems on Saturday.

Gregg Allman left us a great legacy, no small part of which includes his unbelievable compositions.We will forever know: Not My Cross to Bear, Black Hearted Woman, Dreams, Whipping Post, Don't Keep Me Wonderin', Midnight Rider, Leave My Blues Alone, Ain't Wastin' Time No More, Melissa, Desdemona, Rockin' Horse, Queen of Hearts, and Please Call Home. His love for his family and bandmates was passionate as was the love he had for his extraordinary fans.

The band carried on but fell into the trap of rock star excess.

Lehman told EW the Southern rock musician died from a reoccurrence of liver cancer that took a "sudden turn" in the last few days.

The group, which originally featured Allman's older brother, Duane, on lead and slide guitar, was also a precursor to a generation of popular jam bands, like Widespread Panic and Phish, whose music features labyrinthine instrumental exchanges.

But when Gregg Allman revealed his engagement to Shannon Williams in 2012 - at a time when she was just 24 years old - he said that she was his only true love. They played in their first band together, the Allman Joys, in the mid 60's.

By this time Gregg Allman was married Cher - the third of his six wives - with whom he spent three turbulent years. In 2010, Allman received a liver transplant. He had been working on a new solo album, entitled Southern Blood, prior to his death.

"My fondest memories will always be of Gregg, myself, and [late Allman Brothers bassist] Allen Woody sharing a tour bus together-listening to great music and laughing our asses off mile after mile". "I've tried... Words are impossible, Gui Gui" she wrote.

Over the years, the band would break up and reform, but Gregg continued to produced great solo work, with the much-loved Laid Back first. Gregg Allman's early aspiration was to become a dentist. The band members developed a family-style relationship, bonding while hanging out at Macon's Rose Hill cemetery, with Duane in what Gregg said was the father role. All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs and Voice of Gregg Allman, a live album featuring performances by Allman alongside contemporaries Dr. John, Eric Church, Jackson Browne, John Hiatt, Warren Haynes and Widespread Panic, among others, was released in 2015.

The Allman brother will be missed by not only his fans but by his business partners as well. Allman had his biggest hit, I'm No Angel, in 1987.

Despite reports, Gregg Allman has not entered hospice Gregg Allman condemns 'Bathroom. He could be thoughtful, amusing and incisive, a fantastic storyteller and jovial presence, and he could be curt, just getting the job done.
