Musicians & others react to Gregg Allman's death

The death of legendary southern rock musician Gregg Allman has prompted this tribute from Hawkesbury Gazette editor Matt Lawrence.

Gregg Allman, founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, has died at the age of 69.

Cher, who was married to Allman in 1975, tweeted:"I've tried.Words are impossible".

"I ... proceeded to wear that son of a b***h out", Allman later told Rolling Stone.

Gregg was always on the road playing music because he considered art to be a natural remedy for the soul, and it's what kept him going through thick and thin. The Allman Brothers - inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 - won new legions of fans in recent years with the reorganized group's epic live shows, especially their unprecedented string of 238 sold-out concerts at New York's Beacon Theater.

After Duane was tragically killed in a motorbike accident just two years later, Gregg went on to make music with the group and as a solo artist for the next 40 years, finding worldwide success and honing his craft.

"I was out on tour with the Brothers and the end of the tour came and my manager calls me and says, 'listen on your way home to Savannah, Georgia, we want you to stop off in Memphis and meet this guy called T-Bone Burnett, " he said. Later that year, he canceled more dates, citing a throat injury.

"It was epic", Jourard said of watching the Allman Brothers for the first time in the Gainesville High School gym in 1969.

The Allman Brothers Band likewise split up in the 1980s and then re-formed several times over the years.

Even non-musicians like Cameron Crowe and Jeanine Pirro honored Allman for his contributions to pop culture. He followed with a pair of No. 3s: "Anything Goes" later that May and "Can't Get Over You" in August 1988.

Lehman said Allman had recently finished what would be his final album, titled Southern Blood and scheduled for release in September.

"He was a kind and gentle soul with the best laugh I ever heard". He blamed cancer for Allman's death.

Gregg Allman was born in Nashville in 1947, a year after brother Duane. The band's founding bassist, Berry Oakley, died in a motorcycle crash the following year.

It may sound silly, but I started to realise my own as the albums of my youth started to be referred to as the "classics" from yesterday.

"The Allman Brothers Band's keyboardist and vocalist got sober two-and-a-half years ago after a notorious 25-year battle with substance abuse that made for an unpredictable, sometimes surly temperament".

Lehman said Allman died at about 2:30 p.m. ET, surrounded by his family and Middleton. Gregg was devastated, but he and the other band members agreed they should push on. He was admitted to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2006 and, with the Allman Brothers, received a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement in 2012.
