Vikings' Zimmer: 'I'll be back shortly with one eye or two'

"I'll be back shortly", Zimmer told reporters, per Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press. "I would like to put to rest, unfortunately I have too much time on my hands now, so I hear about "oh, this might shorten his coaching career" and all these things".

Mike Priefer, the Vikings' special teams coordinator, served as interim head coach in Week 13 previous year while Zimmer was away due to the eye problems. He has the practice video sent to his iPad and has held an afternoon conference call every day with his coaches to go over what he sees.

Mike Zimmer is finally taking some needed time away after his eighth eye surgery in seven months, but there is plenty to discuss from organized team activities and Viking Update's Tim Yotter and the Star Tribune's Jim Souhan break it down. "I guess in the long run it's the best thing for me". "This will not keep me from coaching".

So he will be back for OTAs on June 5-8 and for minicamp June 13-15, provided he is cleared by doctors. The doctors have told me, because I asked them one time "is this a lost cause?"

Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards talked about coaching without Zimmer on Wednesday.

But, he noted, once a coach, always a coach: "Players are probably getting exhausted of me texting them because I'm texting them about things I see on tape". Really, it's not been that bad that part. "I do miss being in the meetings with the players and especially being out on the field where I can give immediate feedback to technique and things like that".

"The pressure was down, so that was a good thing", Zimmer said. "The coaches have done real good job relaying messages". If it is, let's just let it go.' He said, 'No, it's not like that. "But this is not going to keep me from coaching one way or another".
