Trump & Macron engage in fierce handshake battle during first meeting

Trump had yet another odd handshake with a world leader when he met with newly-elected French president Emmanuel Macron on Thursday morning.

Macron later head-faked Trump, choosing instead to greet German Chancellor Angela Merkel, then NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and then, crossing back to his right, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, before turning to the American President.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday hinted that he failed to woo U.S. President Donald Trump's support on Paris agreement on climate change. It's as though he's saying, 'Do you know who I am?

At the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, Macron walks out to greet a group of world leaders before the summit begins.

TRUMP to Macron at a lunch meeting in Brussels on Thursday, according to a French official: "You were my guy" in the French campaign.

Just days before the first round of the French presidential election, Trump frequently championed Le Pen as the "strongest on borders, and she's the strongest on what's been going on in France".

Trump has described himself as "a germ freak" and called handshakes "barbaric". Macron continued to shake Trump's hand even as Trump seemed ready to let go. "My wish in any case is that there should be no hasty decision on this subject by the United States because it is our collective responsibility to retain the global nature of this pledge, which was a first", Mr Macron told reporters.

As my husband and I said our goodbyes to the openly gay career diplomat, I asked him if he'd seen the videos of the handshakes and if he indeed had a chance to warn Macron.

It is not the first time Trump has caught the world's attention with his macho man grip.

The most awkward, aggressive handshake ever?

But as a 39-year-old who has never held elected office, Macron clearly was excited about the appearance with the United States president, which cemented his status as a new global player - and as a formidable handshaker.

"They shook hands for an extended period of time", the Washington Post's Philip Rucker wrote in a pool report.
