Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel of Germany, right, leads Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain through a corner during the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix at the Barcelona Catalunya racetrack in Montmelo, Spain, Sunday, May 14, 2017. The German emerged from the pits after his final slot alongside Hamilton, the pair almost clashing at Turn One before Vettel pulled ahead. Due to the contact it meant Kimi lost control and slammed into me, but it wasn't his fault.
One of the main issues that Hamilton and his Mercedes team have been trying to work out since the start of the 2017 Formula One season is the weight of its W08 challenger as they have been struggling to get near the 728kg weight limit for auto and driver.
Force India pair Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon finished fourth and fifth respectively, the best result for both drivers this year.
"I got a bit fortunate with Valtteri's problem towards the end of the race which bumped me up to third, but of course I'm still happy to be up there again and see all the smiles from the team", Ricciardo said. "It's been a long, long, long time so I used up a lot of energy and I'm looking forward to lying down after this". "I don't know how we managed to lose that", said Vettel.
"I thought it would be more hard for him the longer he tried but then I had no tow [from backmarkers] and he sailed past", said Vettel. But Raikkonen was also of the view that Bottas had triggered the chain reaction. I didn't have any real battles and my race was more about trying to keep a rhythm and maintain concentration.
"I could sense he was angry, he said he was angry", said Hamilton.
"I think it was just the rawest fight that I can remember having for some time for which I loved".
"I was inside for Turn One, Kimi came from outside and tried to overtake from there", said the Mercedes driver.
"This is what the sport needs to be every single race...to have that close battle with him, a four times champion, is awesome". I was lucky I was getting a tow. "We were told that the engine could do one more race, but it seems like it could not take it anymore".
"I was eight seconds ahead and then..." "I was doing what I could to stay in front, but as soon as I was alone he just flew past".
The Briton, who made the move stick seven laps later and then made his tyres last to the finish, had sounded strangely breathless during the race when fretting about a strategy that turned out to be spot on.
