1 prisoner remains at large after transport van carrying inmates is overtaken

A prisoner at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Lino Lakes took control of a van and escaped with other prisoners, the Department of Public Safety said Friday morning.

DOC officials said the offenders were being transferred from the MCF-St.

MCF-Lino Lakes is on the north side of the Twin Cities.

In total, there were five inmates at large, but as of 1:26 p.m., only Mitchell remained at large.

The stolen van has possibly been recovered in north Minneapolis.

Minneapolis police say the last inmate, assault convict James Mitchell, was arrested near Interstate 35W after he was seen in a park. The multi-passenger van was in a driveway with the doors open and police vehicles littered the alley behind the house.

At about 11:30 a.m., law officers found five of the prisoners in the Mounds View area.

If sighted, the public should not approach the vehicle, according to Fitzgerald, but should immediately call 911.

Authorities say previous reports of 10 total inmates have been updated as more information became available.
