With Manchester attack wound still fresh, Man United claims Europa League title

The Europa League final went ahead, with Manchester United claiming a 2-0 win over Ajax at the Friends Arena in Stockholm on Wednesday night to win the trophy and book their place in next season's Champions League.

Twenty-two people were killed, many of them children, and 64 wounded in the attack on Monday night at Manchester Arena, where U.S. star Ariana Grande had just held a concert.

The success in Sweden means United's next European fixture will be the UEFA Super Cup match against either Juventus or Real Madrid on 8 August.

Manchester United has won all trophies. I always lose matches, but some guys win every time and I don't.

"We played for England, we played for Manchester, and we played for the people who died". The boys were fantastic.

"He does eye-catching stuff, which with all due respect to people who don't understand the game so well, (they) go 'wow, wasn't that great play?'"

"Today was all or nothing - nearly nothing for us", Mata said, before smiling.

Ander Herrera, voted the man of the match, said the club had been suffering on Tuesday, but echoed Pogba's sentiments.

"Yesterday morning we were devastated".

"I think I just have to make a decision in terms of a football decision, and that's what I'll do".

"If we could, we would obviously change the people's lives for this cup, immediately", Mourinho said. "It's just a football game, it's just a trophy, but if we can help support them with this one per cent it's enough for us".

Afterwards the victorious team and Mourinho posed by a large banner that read "Manchester - A City United".

He also aimed a barb at those managers he described as "poets" who do not win anything.

Unlike the sweeping summer signings made by Louis van Gaal, United are looking for quality over quantity as they attempt to build a squad capable of challenging for the title.

"It is the end of a very hard season".

Goalscorer Pogba also dedicated the win to the city. - Jose Mourinho is the first manager to win both the European Cup/Champions League (2) & UEFA Cup/Europa League (2) a few times.

"Obviously both sides were affected (by the attack in Manchester), but once you play the final, for that moment you forget it", said Bosz. I didn't see the Ajax team I'm used to, pressing and competing for first balls.

"To me it is the most important trophy of my career because it is the last (most recent) - that is how I look at things", he said.

"(They) managed to finish with some dignity. "We have three trophies so enjoy it now", he added. "We try to give the trophy to them that's how we felt before the game, how we feel now and we feel proud to do that and hopefully they can be happy for some hours".

"Wayne Rooney was ready to play, he was a big option". He is a very important player for us.
