Trumps visit to Bethlehem comes after his meeting with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday following the US-Arab-Islamic summit in Riyadh. "Both sides will face tough decisions", he said.
He did not specifically mention the two-state solution, which has always been the focus of global peace efforts and USA diplomacy in the Middle East.
Netanyahu also told Trump that a "durable peace" can be advanced under Trump's leadership.
Trump also implied that Israel was not located in the Middle East, while speaking just before meeting with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin.
Abbas said that he was eager to "keep the door open to dialogue with our Israeli neighbors".
Abbas, for his part, reiterated his commitment to the principle of the two-state solution and to live together with Israel in security and peace.
Abbas said that "our problem is not with the Jewish religion, it's with the occupation and settlements, and with Israel not recognizing the state of Palestine". "Never mentioned the word 'Israel'".
"There is no way to achieve peace in an environment of violence", Trump said.
Mr Trump has vowed to do whatever necessary to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians, dubbing a peace accord "the ultimate deal". "The terrorists and extremists and those who give them aid and comfort must be driven out from our society forever", Trump said. He was apparently taking a jab at Abbas, whose government pays salaries to terrorists and, when they are killed carrying out an attack, to their families.
Trump lit the memorial's eternal flame and laid a wreath in honor of the victims. The first couple deplaned in Rome on Tuesday as part of their nine-day trip overseas, and for the second time in as many days, couldn't seem to get coordinated when it came to holding hands.
