Soundgarden & Audioslave Singer Chris Cornell Has Died

The band had been in the middle of a US tour.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Brian Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected".

3 YEARS AGO - See photos of Cornell with Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails at DTE in 2014. Bumbery also stated that Cornell's family will be working close with the medical examiner and requests privacy in this devastating period. Cornell had performed a Detroit concert with Soundgarden that night.

The final song was a deep cut - Slaves and Bulldozers, which featured a section from another live staple: Led Zeppelin's In My Time of Dying. "Nothing odd. Outstanding performance", Bill Lowe of Port Clinton, Ohio, said, describing the show in a text message to CNN.

Cornell, who grew up in Seattle, said he was kicked out of school at age 15 and he started using drugs at 13.

Along with Cobain's Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Soundgarden was at the front of the new, high-angst, high-octane brand of rock and roll dubbed Grunge.

His death has been ruled "hanging by suicide". Very sad. When I found out, I was so, so sad. In addition to Soundgarden, Pointfest was to feature Stone Sour, Pierce the Veil, Greek Fire and other bands. Two of its singles, "Spoonman" and "Black Hole Sun", won Grammy awards in 1995 for Best Metal Performance and Best Hard Rock Performance, respectively. The band broke up in 2007. He joined the supergroup Audioslave, whose lineup included members of Rage Against the Machine, in 2001. The band released three albums in six years and also performed at a concert billed as Cuba's first outdoor rock concert by an American band, though some Cuban artists have disputed that claim.

Cornell, with little formal training, had one of the music world's most wide-ranging voices which could swing almost four octaves, moving from a deep baritone to a screechingly high tenor.

Cornell's rep confirmed the news just hours after his death. Thinking of his family tonight!

But his wife, Vicky Cornell, told TMZ that her husband did not exhibit signs of depression and did not speak of suicide in the last few weeks.

"If I write a song and put it out there, it's not mine anymore", he told CNN. "He seemed to be genuinely excited to be performing in Detroit", the concertgoer said.
