Phoenix, Buckeye Stand Tall In New US Population Estimates

The U.S. Census Bureau released annual population estimates for 2016 and Maine's overall population grew by an estimated 15 percent.

Nationally, the census data shows that 10 of the 15 fastest-growing large cities a year ago were in the southern United States, with four of the top five in Texas.

"Overall, cities in the South continue to grow at a faster rate than any other US region", said demographer Amel Toukabri of the bureau's population division. Four of the top five cities the Census Bureau highlighted as the fastest-growing are in Texas.

Charleston's population is estimated to 134,385. Census estimates put its 2016 population at roughly 13,500.

New apartment developments have gone up in all three of the Long Island villages with the largest population gains.

The Chicago metropolitan area, which includes the city and suburbs and extends into IN and Wisconsin, saw the greatest population losses IN the nation IN 2016. But the city added just 263 residents from 2015 to 2016.

Charleston's population was at its highest, with more than 85,000 people living in the city, during the 1960 census.

But many Suffolk County towns are shrinking, according to the Census Bureau which estimated Brookhaven Town lost 1,602 people, Islip lost 1,491 and Babylon lost 847. Houston's population rose 0.81 percent to 2,284,816. "Since the 2010 Census, the population in large southern cities grew by an average of 9.4 percent".

"The Trump administration has proposed an irresponsible funding level for the Census Bureau that can not sustain thorough, timely preparations for the 2020 Census and preserve the collection of vital information about our population, communities, and economy through other surveys".

While figures released in May by the state's Office of Tourism and Choose Chicago show the number of tourists visiting the state and city have hit record highs, what's drawing in out-of-towners doesn't appear to be compelling residents to stay.

Some places in ME also saw notable growth.

Despite that, Morris said Chelsea residents can still access most attractions in the Birmingham area in 35 to 40 minutes.

Bennett said he thinks there will soon be a "tipping point" in Chicago, when more residents realize it's time to go.
